2007  Transnet Foundation is proud to report on our operations for 2007. We believe that we have done our company, Transnet and the people of South Africa, proud through our investment in the socio-economic growth and development of, especially, rural communities.

Learners willingly take a pledge (vowing their commitment to the Sharp Minds programme).
During the year under review, we revised the strategies of the Foundation, and aimed to align our activities to that of Transnet. We were guided by the four point growth strategy, and it was our intention to ensure that the social responsibility focus contributes to the growth strategy of the group. Furthermore, the social responsibility investment of the Foundation should add to the development of Transnet as one company with diverse operating divisions. In this way, the Foundation played a meaningful role in contributing to Transnet’s success.

Our strategies were made practical through the implement action of a range of projects.

The Education Portfolio of the Foundation saw a strategic shift from infrastructure development, namely building schools, to focusing on the academic development of learners and educators in Maths and Science. This project is today known as Sharp Minds, Get ahead in Life! It sees the participation of 400 learners from four rural communities across South Africa.

The Foundation renewed its commitment to build a second Phelophepa Health Train. During the year under review, we put in place the business plan that will ensure the successful rolling out of a second “miracle train” in 2010. By bringing together all the stakeholders such as Transnet Rail Engineering, that contribute to the construction of Phelophepa I, we ensured that the construction of the Phelophepa II is a project that belongs to the whole of Transnet.

As a company that cares about the economic growth of our country, we also invest in its national pride. Thus, we are once again pleased to report on the role we played as partner of the National Building Massed Choir Festival.

However, we also identified the operational gaps in the Foundation. We recognized the need to increase our investment in our Soccer School of Excellence based in Kempton Park, and we will be in a position to report its turn-around during the next year under review.

These and all the other projects reported on in this Annual Report for the activities of the Foundation during the 2007 year is a reflection of our decision to re-focus our strategy, and to align our social responsibility to Transnet, from which we receive our mandate.

The people who made all this happen are the Trustees of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, the former Head of the Foundation, Mrs Eunice Maluleke and all members of staff. I sincerely thank them all for their dedication to Transnet Foundation. I also pay recognition to Mrs Eunice Maluleke, who left the Foundation during the year under review, for the many years that she invested in the Foundation.

During the year, Transnet Foundation hoped to achieve a strategy that reflects its role as the social responsibility division of Transnet Group and this is what we now report on.
