 When Transnet Foundation embarked on the Sharp Minds! Get Ahead in Life project in 2007, it had a clear goal in mind - to improve the quality of education in South Africa in the critical fields of Maths, Science and technology.  The programme, which seeks to enable learners to achieve outstanding academic performance in these learning areas, and pursue careers in the fields of Science, Engineering and Technology, also contributes meaningfully towards alleviating the challenge of scarce skills in the country as a whole and fits into the human resources development strategy of Transnet. With the learners having completed their Grade 11 year in 2008/9, the results are remarkable, not only in the upliftment of the programme, but for their educators, schools, families and communities, all who are seeing tangible benefits from the interventions. 

Transnet Foundation achieves this aim through its Sharp Minds! Get Ahead in Life programme.

Objectives
Learners are holistically developed and encouraged to be critical thinkers.
  • The primary objective to identify and nurture Learners who show an aptitude for Maths, Science and Technology.
  • To directly support Learners who want to pursue careers in Science, Engineering and Technology through targeted interventions and ensure that their academic and career needs are met.
  • To support educators by ensuring that a sound foundation of curriculum knowledge in Maths, Science, Technology is developed and different teaching methodologies are introduced.
  • To create a conducive teaching and learning environment for schools in the target districts by providing appropriate infrastructure with the necessary material resources and equipment.
