 Through its Phelophepa Healthcare Train, Transnet Foundation’s Health Portfolio provides basic healthcare services to predominantly rural communities, thus ensuring access to affordable healthcare, thereby contributing to the creation of a healthy work force. 

Objectives
The lack of primary healthcare services in rural areas is one of the key challenges facing rural communities and Government has prioritized the delivery of basic healthcare services to all its citizens.
The core objectives of Health Portfolio are to:

  • Enable access to primary healthcare to rural communities.
  • Together with the Department of Health, identify areas around 35 railway stations where Phelophepa can make a significant contribution towards primary healthcare delivery.
  • Indirectly support economic initiatives by empowering people to enhance their physiological and psychological health status.
  • Enhance basic healthcare awareness in rural South Africa, making people aware of looking after their own health and depositing the empowering knowledge of physical well-being within communities.
  • Offer screening and health education services at schools on the Phelophepa route.
